Sometime the mess can be overwhelming, but if you take it one step at a time your home will be looking better in no time! Here are some tips on how to get started.
1. De-Clutter: Clutter is a magnet for dust, bacteria and even mold. All of those things can aggravate allergies and asthma. They are health concerns to healthy people to because they allow sicknesses to linger around the home. The first thing to do is find some boxes. Clear plastic storage containers work great because you can see what s in them at a glance and they come in a variety of sizes that fit easily under the bed or in a closet. Also they are protective if you want to store things in a garage or storage shed.
2. Clean Up Your Desk: Papers stacked everywhere makes it very difficult to find what you need. A filing cabinet is a must for cleaning up that desk and office area. They also come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can be metal or plastic. Add a schedule to you routine, hand written or on the computer, and be sure to schedule cleaning time into your day.
3. Clear Out The Closets: Chances are there are quite a few articles of clothing that you rarely wear. Old clothes can be consigned or donated. Do the same with old toys, games and puzzles. Have a yard sale if you d like. You ll free up a lot of storage space this way!
4. Tackle The Kitchen Cabinets: If you have pots and pans and dishes taking over your kitchen it s time to downsize! You need to get rid of old pots and pans, toss ones with missing lids or ones that you don t use. If there are ones that you use only on special occasions like holidays then neatly pack them away in a protective container and store them in the basement or garage until they are needed. If you have more dishes then your family needs, get rid of some or store a portion away and bring it out when you have company.
5. Use Safe Cleaning Products: When you are cleaning it is extremely important to use safe and effective cleaners. Harsh toxins are found in many brand-name cleaners. These chemicals are dangerous to you, your children, your pets and the environment. The last thing you want to do is make yourself sick by cleaning your home! Upper respiratory conditions like asthma and allergies can be aggravated by harmful toxic chemicals. Make sure the products you are using truly are safe and effective. Some companies try to fool you into buying their products by making them seem gently and safe. They put words like green and natural on the bottle, but that s just for show. The company you buy from should set their own standards for the safety of their products because the government standards are too low. Look for concentrated products to get the most for your money and help protect the environment.
6. Realize This Is NOT Going To Happen Over Night: This is a big job. Take it slow and allow yourself sufficient time to get the job done. You should not try to do this all in one day or even a weekend! Take it one room at a time, and be positive. Remember to take the time to enjoy your progress and don t get down if it is taking longer than you hoped. Every negative thought needs to actively be replaced with a positive one! Instead of thinking, Oh, I ll never get this done, think, Wow, I cleared out my entire closet today! By the time you are done, you will have a clean and organized home AND a healthier, more positive attitude towards life.
